There are several Bergenia taxa which are considered to be rare and endangered in cultivation today. A list of those taxa which are at risk of being lost to cultivation can be found below. These have been separated out into two lists: the first is a list of rare species and hybrids that are difficult to trace in both cultivation and trade, mostly introduced throughout the 20th and 21st centuries; the second is the 19th century varieties believed to have been raised and named by Thomas Smith of Daisy Hill Nursery in Newry, Ireland that are now considered to be exceptionally rare and mostly lost to cultivation, though may still grow in private and public gardens, including botanical collections. If you happen to grow any of the plants listed below, please get in touch as I would love to discuss proposals for their conservation.
