Bergenia stracheyi CC7166

An exceptionally rare seed collection from Chris Chadwell found growing at Sheffield Botanic Garden in 2025. The Himalayan bed wasn’t in great condition at the time of visiting and many of the Bergenia growing there were barely holding on. Thankfully, a small piece of rhizome of this collection was growing at the front of the bed, just large enough to propagate. It was slow to establish but by the end of the year it had produced a few small leaves that had turned a deep purple-red on the upper and lower lamina. Flowers are yet to be observed but the main thing is that we haven’t lost it!

  • No provenance information but Chris Chadwell is known to have collected seed in the Western Himalaya.

The only known specimens growing in the UK are found at Sheffield Botanic Garden.
