Bergenia ‘Eric’s Best’

Very few records of this cultivar exist and there is some debate on the validity of the name. The name suggests it may be an improved variety of 'Eric Smith' (introduced by Beth Chatto in the 1970s) but the garden confirms it was not introduced by them and that they are most likely the same plant.

Morphologically, however, the two plants appear quite distinct with a more tapered apex to the foliage of 'Eric’s Best' compared to the more rounded 'Eric Smith'. Both have interesting winter foliage with 'Eric Smith' turning vibrant purple, while 'Eric’s Best' turns a glossy red.

I generously received a cutting from The Garden House in Devon in 2022. This is the only garden I am aware of where 'Eric’s Best' can be found growing, although I would welcome any more information that might be available on its introduction and where else it might grow.
